Research in Retrospect: The Animal Bones from Daima, Northeast Nigeria

Abstract This brief report describes the animal bones from first millennium BC discovered during Graham Connah’s excavations at Daima Mound in northeastern Nigeria 1965–66. The faunal research was completed by author 1973, but, owing to various circumstances, it has not been possible publish until now. Eighty percent of 657 positively identified come domestic cattle, probably a small-statured breed. They were mostly slaughtered while young adults, which suggests they surplus males. Small stock, goats, and also hunting less important. inhabitants consumed shallow water fish, mainly Clariidae (catfish), easily trapped pools. small collection confirms data other Lake Chad sites, show that cattle herding an important activity .
